<image:title>MURALS - From the Ashes of a fiery Red Revolution will Arise a Third World Phoenix</image:title>
<image:caption>2021 6’x10’ Acrylic on Parachute Cloth E14 Gallery for the the AAPI Youth Youth Rising Art Show Oakland, CA Grace Lee Boggs, Violeta Marasigan and Yuri Kochiyama are featured in the center of the mural. We have been painting the change we would like to see happen in the world, believing energy that we create will manifest itself into reality. By choosing three strong, courageous women ancestors we hope that people will see themselves, mothers and grandmothers, and use their spirits to find the strength to keep fighting for justice and equality. 13 year old Ashlyn So and 12 year old Mina Fedor are Bay Area youth activists organizing rallies and bringing people together to bring awareness about anti Asian hate. The two girls represent our current and future in movement building while also showing they are the phoenix rising. They are what we all fight for and they are continuing the revolutionary work that Grace, Yuri and Violeta dedicated their lives to. We also added Xiao Zhen Xie’s paddle that she found to protect herself with. Engraved On it is a willow tree which represents protection. The lanterns in the background represent the victims of the Atlanta shooting. The phoenix in the background is a Chinese phoenix. We found a saying “Wang no cheng feng” which means hope daughter becomes phoenix. We have Hope that our daughters will be inspired to soar and become leaders and fighters like the phoenix. The phoenix also represents the yin female energy. The bamboo growing from the center symbolizes strength, flexibility and health. It teaches us to adapt to the harshest circumstances. To find balance and inner peace and to prioritize our bodies and health. The title is the last stanza of a poem by Wally Lam for the Yellow Pearl Project produced by Fay Chiang.</image:caption>

      <image:title>MURALS - THE REBIRTH OF COYOLXAUHQUI</image:title>
<image:caption>Funded by the the San Francisco Arts Commission Street SmARTs Program 18th and Valencia Streets San Francisco CA 2018 This mural is an hommage to resilience and the divine feminine capacity to heal. Painted with Nova Acrylic, this mural is a vibrant continuation of an ancient story that was carved in stone thousands of years ago. At the top center of the wall, through a river of water, emerges Coyolxauhqui, the Mexica (Aztec) Goddess of the moon. A 20 foot circular carving of her was unearthed at the bottom of the temple of the God of War, during construction in 1978 in Mexico City. The story goes that her mother, Coatlicue, or the Goddess of the serpent skirt, was sweeping the temple and picked up a ball of feathers that she placed in her pocket and immediately became pregnant with the God of War, Huitzilipochtli (depicted in the mural as Hummingbirds). When Coyolxauhqui learns that her mother is about to birth war onto earth, she mobilizes her 400 brothers to attack. As she attempts to sacrifice her mother, her brother Huitzilipochtli jumps out in full battle armor and decapitates her. Her body is thrown down the temple stairs where she lands broken and dismembered. Huitzilopochtli's reign on earth has been marked by the shift from agricultural to complex societies, forced payment of tribute and taxes to fund the expansion of empire, war, and patriarchy. In this mural Coyolxauhqui has re-emerged and we have celebrated her rebirth on this wall. She has spent some time with her homegirls, Chalchitlicue, the Goddess of fresh-water rivers, and Tonantzin, the Earth Goddess. They have helped her to heal her wounds and she is whole again. The lines crossing and reaching to all four corners represent Ollin, which expresses movement. It also means heart and life energy. And radiating in the center of Ollin is an ear of maize, which represents the Goddess Chicomecoatl. Corn symbolizes nourishment, prosperity, fertility and new life.</image:caption>

      <image:title>MURALS - The Bridge</image:title>
<image:caption>Chinese Historical Society of America 965 Clay Street, San Francisco CA 2022 In collaboration with the Bruce Lee Foundation, the Chinese Historical Society of America and assisted by Pablo Ruiz Arroyo. Projection mapping animation by Macrowaves and music by Mike Dinkins and De’Ahna Turner. Growing up in the Bay Area, we’ve always looked up to Bruce Lee. An icon, a legend and hero to many, his philosophies, internal and external strength, heart and drive set him apart from anyone who has ever lived. In our mural we wanted to portray him as “The Bridge,” a connection between people of all kinds throughout history. He transcends time and space to a place where he becomes a part of us (a unified people from before, now and in the future) and we, a part of him. Quantum physics is the entire measurement of nature- reality in its completeness. Bruce Lee's philosophy was that the quantum field is all around us- we are not independent from it but interconnected and part of a greater totality. Everything is part of everything. We portrayed the idea of the quantum field and Ying/Yang energy emanating behind Bruce Lee in his snake pose. Circling him is a Chinese dragon (Bruce Lee was born in the year of the Dragon in the Chinese Zodiac and the dragon also represents strength and the cycle of life.) We depicted the life cycle of water to reflect Bruce Lee’s life and legacy, as it relates to our own. Water is in this sense eternal as are we. Water evaporates into the atmosphere, comes down in a snowmelt run off, and later becomes waves crashing down in the ocean before rising up again. Only water can exist in all three states of matter. “Be Like Water.” Bruce Lee said that water is formless. “It can flow or it can crash.” Water flows through us. It also reacts to energy and stores memory. Our mural connects Bruce Lee’s journey from Hong Kong, Seattle, Southern California and the Bay Area. We also wanted to portray some of the important figures in Bruce’s life (depicted in the bubbles), from influencers, mentors, family and people who are now influenced by his life and philosophy. Lee Hoi- Chen and Grace Ho Linda Lee Cadwell Yip Man Jesse Glover Brandon and Shannon Lee Taky Kimura Wren Lee Kareem Abdul Jabbar James Yimm Lee Sterling Silliphant Dan Inosanto Juju Chan Wu- tang clan Jim Kelly Esmeralda Falcon Jiddu Krishnamurti Muhammed Ali Ryusei Imai Bruce Lee’s legacy and teachings will continue to inspire and live on through future generations as people yearn to find ways to connect with one another and become greater versions of themselves.</image:caption>

<image:title>MURALS - Protectors of the Sacred. A Prayer for Buffalo Nation</image:title>
<image:caption>San Francisco, CA 2020 In collaboration with Paint the Void The Indigenous population, like other communities of color, suffered higher infection rates and poorer health outcomes due to the Covid-19 pandemic. This mural is a call for action to bring to light the disparities in care and resources provided to the Navajo and Hopi communities during the pandemic. It is also a prayer to ask our ancestors for assistance in non-colonial medicinal ways. Depicting the vast New Mexico sky and the plains where buffalo once abundantly roamed, it is an ode to the Navajo and Hopi Nation and a call to protect these vulnerable populations. “Protect the Sacred” references Indigenous people’s connection to their ancestral lands. The symbol in the center of the mural depicts the Navajo Nation seal with fifty projectile points or arrowheads symbolizing the Navajo Nation's protection within the fifty states. The opening at the top of the three concentric lines is considered the East. The lines represent the rainbow and sovereignty of the Navajo Nation. Inside the seal and radiating out from the Buffalo in the center are symbols to represent the Medicine wheel that is used by Native American tribes for health and healing. It represents the four directions and elements to teach us that we need to balance the four aspects of ourselves; the physical, the mental, the spiritual and the emotional. The mural was originally located on the front facade of Buffalo Exchange on 23rd and Valencia st. Both Marina and Elaine having strong roots in the Mission District, wanted to address the connection between both places so they included a Lowrider that one might see cruising around the neighborhood. At the time, the Mission District had the highest rate of Covid cases in San Francisco. “Citywide, 25 percent of positive cases are among Latinos, although they made up only 15 percent of the San Francisco population. This likely reflects risk factors such as living in crowded conditions, and whether residents have sufficient support to stay home and reduce their outings.” -Office of the Mayor, April 20th, 2020 The license plate of the Lowrider reads MMIW as a nod to the Missing Murdered Indigenous Women movement, which is a human rights crisis that has also been simultaneously plaguing reservations across the country without acknowledgement from the government or media. It is important to note that the Lowrider is abandoned. It begs to question, Who’s car is that? and Are they coming back?</image:caption>

      <image:title>MURALS - Ubuntu</image:title>
<image:caption>1900 Oakdale Ave, San Francisco CA 2023 Our mural design was greatly inspired by the owner of the building's family history, stories, artwork and patterns. Three Goddesses are depicted hidden in each section of the wall and integrated into the patterns and color. The first section on the far left depicts Lakshmi who symbolizes Prosperity and her animal mount is the Owl. The Owl also represents the element Wind which helps us navigate through the darkness and to see things in a new perspective. Her colors are Red, yellow and gold. The second section depicts Parvati, symbolizing Power and her mount is the Tiger, also representing the element Fire, strength and courage. Her color is primarily red. The third section is Saraswati, goddess of Knowledge and her mount is the Crane representing the element Water, devotion and transformation. Her color is yellow. The last section to the far right is to honor the owner's father with the Japanese Maple tree planted after his passing which also is symbolic of new life. The Elephant represents the element Earth, grounding and peace. We also wanted to reference the Ganesha. All animals depicted are endangered. Spotted Owl Sumatran Tiger Whooping Crane African Forest Elephant The three African beaded dolls in each section are Fertility Dolls. They repeat the theme of the Three Goddesses and Earth Mother as well as connecting with the history and African American community of the Bayview. The patterns that flow throughout the mural are a collection of patterns from the family as they had a textile business. Some patterns we researched from different indigenous cultures and countries. Some patterns and fabrics we integrated are from South African Shweshew, Japanese Shibari, Nigerian Batik, Filipino Binituwan, Tibetan, Guatemalan, Andean, Oaxaca, and many more! Beginning from the threads being woven on the left and continuing into this layered rainbow tapestry, all the different patterns weave a multicultural connection of our world, the journey of life and San Francisco.</image:caption>

      <image:title>MURALS - OUR ANCESTORS' WILDEST DREAMS</image:title>
<image:caption>San Francisco Museum of Modern Art 151 3rd Street, San Francisco CA 2020 Assisted by Priya Handa and Lisa Max With a primary focus on healing and resistance, we aim to help heal society, ourselves, our loved ones. We have always been fascinated with methods of healing generational and current trauma through visual art, and this continues to be our goal with every project. This is also a personal piece for us because we aim to help heal one of the two of us. Twin one, Marina Perez-Wong was diagnosed less than a year ago with stage four metastatic breast cancer. She has already undergone some of the strongest chemotherapy and will have more rounds followed by surgeries and radiation later this year. We have both been trained and artistically raised by Susan Cervantes, co-founder and head of Precita Eyes Muralists. She inspired us to paint our version of a mandala. Because she is our “art mom” and we have recently been motivated by the concept of mothers, we felt that it was only fitting in helping to heal. The recent (but also unfortunately incredibly historic) events that have happened in relation to the murder of George Floyd and other people of color has sparked a need for change. It is quoted somewhere that when George Floyd called out to his mother, he called out to all mothers. Historically women and mothers are disrespected, neglected and/ or abused. We call earth our mother and society continue to destroy her. He couldn’t breathe and we are in a state of crisis due to COVID, especially so for people with respiratory problems. The central focus of our design consists of a Sakura Tree reflective of healthy lungs. Sakura trees are associated with the heart chakra and its properties use feminine energy to bring healing and love. The idea of a tree also relates to a hidden chakra located underneath the heart chakra called the Hrit chakra (Wish Fulfilling Tree). It symbolizes the ability to manifest what one wishes to happen in the world. The 7 young women depicted in the mural are our future leaders and their joy is the ultimate act of resistance. Four are from the Radical Monarchs and three are students from the Oakland School from the Arts. They are dancing on water over sunken colonizer ships, border walls, I.C.E and monuments that have been thrown into lakes and rivers that represent the dismantling of patriarchy and white supremacy. They are not just surviving but thriving and they are their ancestors’ wildest dreams. Behind the tree is circular vibrating energy painted in shades of green with stencil designs lining each vibration. We wanted to find a way to include women artists from our community (Cece Carpio, Nancy Pili, Priya Handa and Lisa Max) that inspire us and who also create movement related activist work. Each woman created a stencil with a symbol that represents their own personal healing medicine. Using those stencils, we overlapped them to create texture and movement in the background. Women support one another in many ways, and we hope this collective feminine energy will activate healing in our community and in the people that experience the mural. The tree’s roots grow throughout the bottom of the wall creating balance and stability. Milagros are scattered on the tree. Milagros are traditionally left on shrines in Mexico when a prayer or calling has been answered. We are using them in the contemporary context of assisting in the healing of specific ailments or particular needs or desires. Cherry Blossoms flow throughout the mural symbolizing our dreams and wishes coming to life. We have been inspired by chakras and mandalas as a method to learn more about ourselves and how to find balance in our physical and spiritual lives. Chakras are centers of consciousness and life energy in the body. Our mural focuses on the heart (Anahata) and the root (Muladhara) chakras. The Heart Chakra is located in the central place of the chakra system. It is the center of love and can heal and transform the physical energies into spiritual energies and vice versa. It also is an air element associated with lungs, breasts and thymus which oversees regulating the immune system. We were drawn to the Heart Chakra because of the imbalance in our world right now, Covid, war, pollution, and violence. We wish to channel the heart chakra to restore balance in Mother Earth and our own physical bodies while opening the hearts of hate to love. The Root Chakra’s energy is based on the earth element and located in the pelvic floor, base of the spine and is associated with the feeling of grounding and safety. If we want to balance the heart chakra we must also balance the root chakra.</image:caption>

      <image:title>PRIVATE COMMISSIONS - Connecting with the Sacred</image:title>
<image:caption>Private Commission 2022 San Francisco 5’x24’ Acrylic on MDO Panel Our mural “Connecting with the Sacred” is inspired by Reach Capital as a female founded venture fund. With women being the center and anchor of the mural, each figure represents a natural element. Stone, Air, Wood, Earth, Fire and Water. We arranged them so the figures look like they are talking to one another. The figures symbolize that through collaboration and innovation we can build a better future for everyone. Radiating from them are a variety of flowers which are national flowers from different countries which represent diversity and inclusion. In the background the colorful symmetrical patterns create balance, and the interconnected circles represent technology and connection. Inside each connector bubble, sacred geometry symbols which are derived from nature represent the idea that although we are in a technological world we are still connected with the natural world, and we must always maintain that balance.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Community Projects - Flowers for Our Families</image:title>
<image:caption>Richmond, CA Painted in collaboration with the Asian Pacific Environmental Network community and youth interns. 8’x10’ on Non-Woven Media 2023 Narrative written by APEN Flowers for our Families is a tribute to the ways that working class Asian Americans have built power and made home in Contra Costa. “We are daughters, sons, grandmothers, mothers, fathers and aunties. American-made wars tore our homes apart and made our families refugees. Bravery and sheer determination led us to cross oceans to find a different future for our families. Today, this determination allows us to show up at school, at city hall, and in our community to call for a Richmond with clean air, water, and land for us to live, work, play and thrive. Together, we’ve painted this image of our journeys: across generations and nationalities, “Flowers for our Families,” represents the past, present, and our hopes for the future. The blue waters of the mural carry the boats of our ancestors fleeing for safety, even as it washes around the hands of elders holding a child at the center of the mural. At the top left, there is the Bay, representing a vision of our hopes for the future. There are the national flowers of our homelands, including the dok champa, the white flowers that surround the images of our elders and decorate the hair of our youth, a reminder of Laos; the red and pink peony of China; the lotus of Vietnam; the coffea arabica of Yemen; the orchid of Singapore; and the golden cassia fistula or ratchaphruek of Thailand. They represent how we bring our culture and tradition to enrich this community and make it flourish. We are grateful to the facilitation, vision and expertise of artists Elaine Chu and Marina Perez-Wong of Twin Walls Mural Company for their help in guiding the mural process. Elders and youth together, we brainstormed, planned and painted this mural – and we can do the same to build a safe, healthy community.”</image:caption>

      <image:title>Community Projects - Soaring Through La Mission</image:title>
<image:caption>La Fenix- 1950 Mission Street, San Francisco CA In collaboration with 10 youth artists from Youth Art Exchange and funded by Art for Civil Discourse 2023 Narrative written by the Youth Art Exchange artists In San Francisco, a city where entire neighborhoods are often covered in fog, the Mission is a colorful valley that stays warm even when the rest of the city isn’t shining. With the Mission being a community that glues together the South and the North, the sun and the phoenix symbolize the light that the Mission radiates to the community. Everyday, we see the diversity of our people from the elderly to youth, working-class to yuppies, and a mixing pot of ethnicities that all enjoy the Mission for what it is. It retains the historical significance of San Francisco’s original Victorian houses that have been passed down from the 19th century to the present. Houses and neighborhoods become symbols of the people who lived there or the people who currently live there, creating their own source of light. Its impact creates an inerasable legacy and history. It maintains a working class environment with businesses and restaurants while also providing a fair share of nature, local parks, and places for anyone to enjoy the sunshine in all its glory. Within the mural, native plants play a role in the land as they represent the continuous growth of the community and how it will forever flourish, even in difficult times. This mural also pays homage to the locals who grew up in the Mission, played at Dolores and ended the day with ice cream and to those who watched the skaters bomb down the hills while the sun set. All of these elements shed light not only on the people here, but also the environment of the Mission District. The mural evokes a sense of freedom, gratitude and an appreciation for what we call home. We also aim to showcase a side of the Mission that gentrification is slowly eradicating. As those in power focus on profits, we will see fewer Mission locals enjoying homes they've had for decades and fewer resources for the struggling class. As the powers that continue to clear a path for their profit-driven agenda, our mural aims to express our opposition to the ongoing gentrification in the city. It tells a story of rebirth and rebuilding in the community while highlighting what the Mission has meant to us and what it will mean to us in the future. We want our local community to feel a sense of warmth and love when they see our work.</image:caption>
